Reflection- Fall 2016

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop. The teacher understands each student has a different style of learning and development; and the teacher will make sure that each lesson, is taught in a way that will access each different style. Teacher’s will make sure that the areas of reasoning, language, social, emotional, and physical needs are demonstrated with each lesson. Teacher’s will use these different aspects and will  design and implement the appropriate challenges for their students.

Reflection: Spring 2015

The teacher understands how learning occurs– how learners construct knowledge and acquire skills. A teacher understands the influence of each learner’s intellectual, verbal, social, emotional, and physical development. They understand that development is important in any aspect of the learning experience.

Spring 2014 I was placed in North Side Middle School for Practicum 266. During this time, I was asked to tutor four children in math class. These students were all on a different performance level and each learned differently. I was able to teach one student with a whiteboard, another student just needed to be talked through it once, the other wanted reassurance his work was correct, and the last only needed a calculator. I was able to pinpoint the children’s learning style; I had and have to commit myself to learn new ways to teach each child in a way that a concept would click. I am determined to help my students succeed; I will do anything to help my students succeed, I have a responsibility to my students to help them in anyway. Yes, there were many difficulties along the way in order to help the students reach a point of passing. However, we kept pushing and trying new things until we succeeded. I had a teacher once tell me that you cannot show up in your ivory tower expecting each of you students to perform at grade level. You may have students who perform below grade level, and you cannot fail those students by skipping over them to focus on those who are on track. As a teacher, it is your job to balance your time with students while helping them in a way that is best for each student. As a teacher this can be a struggle, it is so easy, especially for me to slip into a mindset of doing something and forgetting to change it up for other students. As teachers, we learn just as much from our colleagues as we do from our students. It is easy to gain some type of insight knowledge based on other’s previous experiences to learn from. I love to learn from other people. When you ask colleagues for help it does not mean that this technique of teaching will work for you. However, for me I have a higher ability of making up and incorporating techniques in my classroom once I have heard others opinions.

As a teacher, I have a goal for keeping track of my student’s progress. I want to be able to print out each one of my student’s grades and assignments list that were due that past week. I want to be able to go through and highlight any missing assignments, which must be returned to the teacher in order to receive credit. In doing this I will be able to hold my students accountable for their grades. A limitation that will occur when trying to reach all students would be during finals time. Many school require that a written test must be made and given to the students on a certain day. However, I was a child who struggled with test taking. During the time period of finals week I want to be able to give my students a choice; do they want to take a test, do a project, or create a presentation. In doing this I will make sure that each choice covers the required material, all three choices will require the same amount of effort. It will not be easy, but students will receive a choice, so they are comfortable during a stressful time. To me collaboration with others is necessary requirement in my field. Luckily, I have much experience with teamwork. I am willing to work with others in order to achieve the best results for my students. I will stop at nothing to help my students succeed, and that means using every resource you have in your repertoire.
