Why Most Local Schools’ A-F Grade Dropped

According to Emma Kate Fitts, education reporter for the Muncie Star Press, most schools in Muncie had their 2016 state A-F grades drop compared to their grades in 2015.  While the scores have dropped, it is important to realize that 2016’s scores were calculated using a new method.  This year, the method of scoring took into account whether or not a student improved on ISTEP, not just pass or fail.  The 2016 grades also reflect scores from the new, more difficult ISTEP for the first time.  This is because the school first saw a drop in scores in 2014 and lawmakers did not want the scores to drop even lower for the next year. This meant many schools were kept at the same grade despite worse ISTEP scores.
