Hoosier Academy is below state average in ISTEP scores, iRead scores, and graduation rates. Their drop out rates is also 60% above state average. However, Ball State is trying to keep the Hoosier Academy open because they have been making progress and Ball State has already approved another two years of online public schooling. Ball State is also an authorizer of Hoosier Academy, which means they receive 3% of the annual state tuition or about $400,000. Additionally, this is not the first hearing to keep the school open. In January 2015, Ball State defended Hoosier Academy and the decision was to reevaluate the following year. Now it is time to reevaluate and the State Board of Education has to decide whether to transfer the school to a different authorizer, reduce the money Ball State receives, not take action, or close the school of 3,000 students.

Click here to learn more about Ball State to Defend Failing Charter School
Abstract by Elizabeth Wood, AIR apprentice

Ball State to Defend Failing Charter School The State Board of Education is deciding Hoosier Academy’s, a charter school, fate because they have received five F’s in the past five years.
