{"id":1019,"date":"2016-01-18T09:08:54","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T14:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2016-04-19T10:38:08","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T14:38:08","slug":"stoichiometry-algorithm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/01\/18\/stoichiometry-algorithm\/","title":{"rendered":"Stoichiometry Organizer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stoichiometry is the heart of chemistry, but is often a challenging concept for students to grasp. \u00a0My goal was to generate an informational organizer for students to use to assemble all of the necessary pieces of information in order to successfully solve a gram to gram stoichiometry problem. \u00a0The resulting algorithm organizer was introduced to students during the stoichiometry unit:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Stoichiometry-Algorithm.docx\" rel=\"\">Stoichiometry Algorithm<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Students were asked to identify the components of a stoichometry problem that were needed in order\u00a0to find a solution to it, and then to insert them in the correct framework order to solve the problem. \u00a0They used the organizer during class as well as during homework to aid in their problem solving. \u00a0Several students asked if it they would be allowed to use it on the end of unit assessment, but we decided against it. \u00a0Our reasoning was that if students had an understanding of dimensional analysis (factor label) and unit canceling, they really wouldn&#8217;t have a need to use the organizer after practicing with it.<\/p>\n<p>I felt that having a framework and knowing what information should be used to solve a problem reduced the stress load on students and made them more willing to attempt solving a problem. \u00a0Most\u00a0students grew beyond the organizer&#8217;s use, while others relied upon it throughout the unit. \u00a0Overall, students reacted positively to using this tool, and I plan to incorporate it in my own future classroom.<\/p>\n<p>InTASC 1 was applied in the use of this tool as it acted as\u00a0a scaffold for students who needed more support in being successful in tackling stoichiometry problems. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t a necessary or required tool to solve problems,\u00a0and those students who felt as if they had a mastery of how to solve the required problems discontinued its use. \u00a0HLPs 1-3-12 were utilized in this activity to explain and model content while helping students to organize data to alleviate frustration regarding imitating problem solving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stoichiometry is the heart of chemistry, but is often a challenging concept for students to grasp. \u00a0My goal was to generate an informational organizer for students to use to assemble &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/01\/18\/stoichiometry-algorithm\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Stoichiometry Organizer<\/span> <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[13,65,20,21,51,61,62,69],"class_list":["post-1019","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-intasc-01","tag-chemistry","tag-differentiated","tag-hlp-1","tag-hlp-12","tag-hlp-3","tag-lamp","tag-organizer","tag-scaffold"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1019","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1019"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1019\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1244,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1019\/revisions\/1244"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1019"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1019"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1019"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
