{"id":1022,"date":"2016-01-18T09:09:20","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T14:09:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=1022"},"modified":"2016-04-19T10:28:03","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T14:28:03","slug":"balancing-chemical-reaction-equations-using-beads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/01\/18\/balancing-chemical-reaction-equations-using-beads\/","title":{"rendered":"Balancing Chemical Reaction Equations Using Beads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kinesthetic activities are one of my favorite ways to engage students in their learning. \u00a0We utilized several methods in modeling\u00a0the art of balancing chemical reaction equations, but one of my favorite activities was balancing reactions using beads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1190\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1190\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1190\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Balancing equations using beads.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/IMG_1576.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1190\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Balancing equations using beads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1191\"><br \/>\n<\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The activity required students to string plastic pony beads on pipe cleaners to form molecules that appeared on both sides of a chemical reaction equation. \u00a0The goal was for students to understand that coefficients apply to an entire molecules when balancing a chemical equation, not just an individual atom within them. \u00a0As such, each time a coefficient changes, an entire new molecule must be made on one side of the reaction, which in turn impacts the other side as well. \u00a0The physical act of building the models perfectly demonstrated this.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>InTASC 3 \u00a0learning environments supports an activity such as this. \u00a0It was\u00a0performed\u00a0\u00a0in student pairs, allowing for independent group work as well as self pacing. \u00a0It is difficult not to be engaged in learning when something is placed into your hands. \u00a0However, not all of the students chose to complete the activity as outlined, and I was fine with that. \u00a0I feel\u00a0that allowing students options in their education is key, and when there is insistence upon completing an assignment in one and only one way, there is a loss of individualized instruction. \u00a0I encourage students to take ownership in their education, and choice allows for that. \u00a0InTASC 8&#8217;s modeling slant also can be applied to this activity as it showed\u00a0a physical modeling aspect of a concept.<\/p>\n<p>HLPs 3-6-9-13 were used in this activity. \u00a0I chose to use this activity to break a misconception that students possess that only a single atom is affected when balancing an equation, as it models the correct idea that an entire compound or molecule is impacted when coefficients are used.<\/p>\n<p>This activity was adapted from:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/teachers.sduhsd.net\/ccollins\/Balancing%20Equations%20Beads.pdf\">http:\/\/teachers.sduhsd.net\/ccollins\/Balancing%20Equations%20Beads.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kinesthetic activities are one of my favorite ways to engage students in their learning. \u00a0We utilized several methods in modeling\u00a0the art of balancing chemical reaction equations, but one of my &hellip;
