{"id":1046,"date":"2016-03-23T19:58:04","date_gmt":"2016-03-23T23:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=1046"},"modified":"2016-04-19T11:17:30","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T15:17:30","slug":"authentic-assessment-solution-exam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/03\/23\/authentic-assessment-solution-exam\/","title":{"rendered":"Authentic Assessment: Solution Exam Practical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I always enjoy any activity that involves authentic\u00a0laboratory work, so when it came time for the solutions unit in Chemistry I, I decided to allow students a choice for their end of unit assessment. \u00a0Either assessment was worth the same number of points, but there would be an option of either completing a traditional paper and pencil test, or performing a lab practical exam that involved making actual solutions. \u00a0A rubric was constructed to grade the outcome of the practical:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/Solution-Lab-Practical-Rubric.xlsx\" rel=\"\">Solution Lab Practical Rubric<\/a>\u00a0as well as a modified testing instrument:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/Solutions-Practical-Exam.docx\" rel=\"\">Solutions Practical Exam<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Students practiced calculations involving molarity, molality and dilutions before performing a lab that involved these calculations and that required them to actually make specified\u00a0solutions using appropriate glassware. \u00a0From there, students decided which version of the exam they would take, and they signed up for a time slot to perform the practical. \u00a0Only 22% (14\/65) students decided to take the practical version of the exam<\/p>\n<p>Differentiating takes twice as long to front load, but is always worth it in the end and makes for some of my favorite days in the classroom as I feel like I am able to better reach more of my students.
