{"id":1054,"date":"2016-03-23T20:26:17","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T00:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=1054"},"modified":"2016-04-20T13:31:01","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T17:31:01","slug":"preassessment-gallery-walk-gas-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/03\/23\/preassessment-gallery-walk-gas-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Preassessment Gallery Walk: Gas Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We began the Gas Laws unit with a gallery walk preassessment to see how much, if any, knowledge the students had regarding the Kinetic Molecular Theory. \u00a0All eight postulates of the theory were written on the white boards around the room. \u00a0Students were grouped\u00a0into pairs and given dry erase markers and asked whether or not they agreed with the written statements of:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gases are made up of really small particles.<\/li>\n<li>Gas molecules move in a straight line until they collide with something else.<\/li>\n<li>Gases occupy mostly empty space.<\/li>\n<li>The energy of a gas molecule has a direct relationship to the temperature of the gas.<\/li>\n<li>When they collide, gas molecules bounce off of each other.<\/li>\n<li>Gases with different chemical properties behave the same under specific conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Pressure, volume, temperature and amount are the most important variables in studying gas laws.<\/li>\n<li>There is one constant value that all gases share.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The student pairs were to discuss each postulate and then to write &#8220;agree&#8221; or &#8220;disagree&#8221; under it. \u00a0All of the above postulates are true. \u00a0Students then rotated around the room until all nine stations were visited, including a Know\/Want to Know T-chart about gases. \u00a0Afterward we discussed each postulate, and then asked for each side to defend their logic and reasoning as to why they agreed or disagreed with a statement. \u00a0Most of the students had some experience with gas behavior and accurately predicted the outcomes, but others\u00a0were surprised by some of the statements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1201\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_1577.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1201 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_1577-e1460424756844-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Know\/Want to Know table\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_1577-e1460424756844-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_1577-e1460424756844-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_1577-e1460424756844.jpg 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Know\/Want to Know table<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This activity was a great launchpad to bridge between gas laws and thermodynamics and to give me an idea of what knowledge students already possessed. \u00a0It helped me activate prior student knowledge and\u00a0plan for future instruction as well. \u00a0Because of this, InTASCs 3 &amp;
