{"id":1056,"date":"2016-03-23T20:26:41","date_gmt":"2016-03-24T00:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=1056"},"modified":"2016-04-20T13:30:23","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T17:30:23","slug":"gas-law-demo-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2016\/03\/23\/gas-law-demo-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas Law Demo Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I started teaching the Gas Law unit lacking\u00a0inspiration. \u00a0I have always considered the Gas Laws to be rote and uninspiring. \u00a0My first period unit opening lesson was less than engaging. \u00a0After class Mr. Smith asked me how I thought it went I said that it was less than ideal. \u00a0After some discussion, and finding a vacuum pump, I scrapped my lecture plans in favor of performing Gas Law demonstrations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1192\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1192\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Gas Law Demos.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/01\/Image-1-1.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gas Law Demos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Up first was to make a Gas Law manipulative. \u00a0This can be used to determine what will happen to a particular variable in a Gas Law problem when another variable is controlled for. \u00a0Students enjoyed making these, and several of them used them throughout the duration of the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Boyle&#8217;s Law was demonstrated twice, once by the students and once by myself. \u00a0Students were given a cup of mini marshmallows and a medicine syringe. \u00a0The marshmallows were placed inside the syringe, the tip was covered, pressure was removed from the barrel, turn contracting\u00a0the marshmallows inside. \u00a0This was repeated except the tip of the syringe was covered, pressure was increased and the marshmallows expanded. \u00a0Next up was using the newly discovered vacuum pump and relating it to Boyle&#8217;s Law by placing snack sized bags of potato chips and whipped cream inside and seeing them inflate. \u00a0This opened the discussion as to what happens when pressure is increased in relationship to volume and Boyle&#8217;s Law.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1196\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_0835.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1196\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1196 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/03\/IMG_0835-e1460381951936-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Vacuum pump found and ready for use!
