{"id":800,"date":"2015-11-15T07:54:34","date_gmt":"2015-11-15T12:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/?p=800"},"modified":"2015-12-14T20:59:53","modified_gmt":"2015-12-15T01:59:53","slug":"science-behind-the-thanksgiving-day-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/2015\/11\/15\/science-behind-the-thanksgiving-day-table\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Behind the Thanksgiving Day Table"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oftentimes, the last school day before a break is a day of lost instruction. \u00a0My goal in forestalling this before Thanksgiving was to plan a lesson based around the science of things found on a Thanksgiving Day table.<a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-838 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0183\" width=\"401\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183.jpg 1632w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/12\/IMG_0183-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0activity began with students performing a factor label calculating the number of seconds that have transpired since the first Thanksgiving. \u00a0Students then rotated through stations that asked them to investigate and predict, then experiment\u00a0to see if a stick of butter could be used as a fuel source for a candle, what the insides of cranberries look like in that makes them float, what the water content of popcorn was, and what happens to a marshmallow when it is microwaved. \u00a0Click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/akhouck\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2015\/11\/The-Science-of-Thanksgiving-copy.docx\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a full length copy of this activity.<\/p>\n<p>This activity utilized InTASC standards 3-5-7-8. \u00a0I like how timely\u00a0this activity was and how it related to low cost real-life items. \u00a0It also was a review of previous concepts such as factor label and density. \u00a0The kids were actively engaged and enjoyed working with partners of their choices. \u00a0 HLPs 2-6-13-14 were used in planning and implementing instruction for this project.\u00a0The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the incentive of food being a main draw for student engagement, and science coming along for a ride. \u00a0Incidentally, a popcorn kernel from this activity landed in a leaky sink, and sprouted over break. \u00a0We have since recused it, potted it in a beaker and it is now Corny, our class mascot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oftentimes, the last school day before a break is a day of lost instruction. \u00a0My goal in forestalling this before Thanksgiving was to plan a lesson based around the science &hellip;
