Using NPR as a Model to Present Historical Information About a Major City
Students used an NPR article about “How Paris Became Paris” as a model; chose a major city in the world that also developed and expanded some time between 1500 to 1820; and created and presented their own article.
Issues this Best Practice Addresses:
Finding good sources; Choosing topics of interest; Gathering facts related to the unit topic; categorizing information; displaying and communicating research in a creative and effective manner
Major Challenges to Implementation:
Technology problems while presenting; meeting deadlines; finding enough sources; collecting all parts required on the rubric
Benefits Derived from Implementing this Best Practice:
Sharing research with other students; comparing and contrasting topics; student choice; opportunity to emphasize skills sometimes not used very often in class; develop writing skills; mix social studies with other curriculum ie, Journalism and Art; explore creativity
Evidence Illustrating Success:
increased student achievement
