{"id":1137,"date":"2012-11-15T13:09:56","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T18:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/cte\/blog\/2012\/11\/15\/education-nation-6-leading-edges-of-innovation\/"},"modified":"2012-11-15T13:09:56","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T18:09:56","slug":"education-nation-6-leading-edges-of-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/cte\/education-nation-6-leading-edges-of-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Nation: 6 Leading Edges of Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The keynote speaker for the HECC Conference 2012 in Indianapolis, IN was Milton Chen, Ph.D., senior fellow for the George Lucas Educational Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/cte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2012\/11\/20121115-131049.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/cte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/113\/2012\/11\/20121115-131049.jpg\" alt=\"20121115-131049.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen talked about his learning journey, his work on Sesame Street, and the details of his website: Edutopia.org. At Eutopia.org you can find educational films, resouces for teachers, and over 150 documentaries that integrate students in the production of these films.<\/p>\n<p>The keynote speaker also explained some of the educational problems in U.S. such as the drop out rates in schools and the students&#8217; reading levels. In order to overcome some of these challenges, informal learning (after school programs, museums, field trips, etc.) should be integrated with technology. In addition, learning should be at &#8220;any time, any place, any path and any pace&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen preaches 6 leading edges of innovation, which are the following:<\/p>\n<p>1. Changing our thinking<br \/>\nWe need to change the way we view education by changing our vocabulary and our thinking about new roles.<\/p>\n<li>Not schools, but learning centers<\/li>\n<li>Not Teacher, but a mentor or team leader <\/li>\n<li>Not students, but team members<\/li>\n<p>2. Curriculum and assesment<br \/>\nWe also need to change the curriculum. Instead on focusing on textbooks, we need to focus on project based learning, integrate social\/emotional learning, and a global and bilingual curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>3. Technology<\/p>\n<p>4. Time\/place<\/p>\n<p>5. Co-teaching<\/p>\n<p>6.
