Some of these have stood the test of time.  Others have not faired so well over time.  Try to watch in context of the times and the earnest intentions of the artists.  These are just a I&#8217;ve seen and could remember off the top of my head.  The best movie of all time is first listed. A movie about adolescent development.\u00a0 And hydrogen peroxide.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also the movie that launched about 6 careers, including Tom Cruise; Note, the person playing the nurse (read the credits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pump Up the Volume<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revenge of the Nerds (Me, in college)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sixteen Candles\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer School\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>War Games (launch of Matthew Broderick&#8217;s career)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Your Time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Akeelah\u00a0and the Bee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freedom Writers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hunger Games<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mean Girls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Precious<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Ron Clark Story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School of Rock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stand and Deliver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peanut Butter Falcon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Documentaries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My Octopus Teacher.  I can&#8217;t recommend this movie enough.  <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Ask me about potential emotional triggers.<\/span>  This is more than a documentary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student Athlete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More TBA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, here from Netflix are 10 Movies for Social Workers (certainly related to education)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>13th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Happy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hunting Grounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Babies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Requiem for the American Dream<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autism in Love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I Am Jane Doe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bad Kids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire at Sea<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mask You Live In<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Movies Option for one of your HMS submissions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before March 11, 2020, HMS emphasize active engagement in arts, science, athletics, etc.&nbsp; But now we need to explore HMS via learning-at-home means.&nbsp; So, with this option, you can do an HMS by simply watching a movie. Well, not just any movie, but one about teachers, teaching, schools, kids, learning, knowledge, intelligence, etc.&nbsp; I\u2019ve put together of movies list above to be suitable for this HMS option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Select a movie from the list.<\/strong>\u00a0 If you know of a movie that is not on the list, let me know in advance.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have those movies above linked to anything but I\u2019m sure you could figure out IMDb.com or Google to learn more about each movie in advance. I\u2019d be happy to make some recommendations for your teaching area, level or other questions you have.\u00a0 <strong>Please choose a movie that you haven\u2019t seen before,<\/strong> or are willing to watch something that perhaps you saw years ago but now want to examine it from an education scholar\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 <br> <br> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Obtain\/watch the movie legally.<\/strong>\u00a0 Most of these should be free in the popular streaming services or your cable provider.\u00a0 The Ball State Library and the Muncie Libraries have large collections of DVDs too.\u00a0 If you need to borrow a DVD player, let me know.\u00a0 I have many of these on DVD or BluRay you may borrow.<br> <br> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m a movie connoisseur so I hope you watch the movie like the art form it is. <strong>Try to watch it like you\u2019re in a theater: <\/strong>Continuously and without too many interruptions or distractions.\u00a0 But sure, make some popcorn.<br> <br> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have a pad of paper<\/strong> nearby to jot a few notes during the movie.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be writing a reflection about the movie in relation to an education issue within the movie. Some of the movies on my list don\u2019t shout the issues, but they are there.\u00a0 Sometimes they are hidden in the art form. Ask if you need help.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deliverable and Scoring Key<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write about 2-3 pages about the movie with the<br>following information:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 points for:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your Name, Course, Section, Semester<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title of Movie, Director, Year released<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brief summary of the plot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evidence of you watching the movie<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 points: Discuss at least one educational issue in<br>the movie. Connect it to a theory from our class or another education<br>class.\u00a0 Cite that theory. Ask for help if<br>you need it.\u00a0 For example, <em>My Fair<br>Lady<\/em> is an exploration of the Pygmalion effect (Chapter 14 from Woolfolk).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 points: Discuss the movie\u2019s impact on or relevance<br>to you.\u00a0 This could include an appreciation<br>of the artistic expression of the movie.\u00a0<br>I can help with this too.\u00a0 For<br>example, in <em>Dead Poet\u2019s Society,<\/em> the slippers shot reveal a bit about<br>the father\u2019s own hang-ups which might explain, well, you need to watch the movie.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below is a PARTIAL list of movies about teachers, teaching, schools, universities, kids, learning, knowledge, intelligence, etc. I&#8217;m sure I missing many good choices.
