{"id":82,"date":"2017-02-17T10:31:43","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T15:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/istudio\/?p=82"},"modified":"2017-02-17T10:31:43","modified_gmt":"2017-02-17T15:31:43","slug":"video-in-the-classroom-planning-checklist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/espace.bsu.edu\/istudio\/video-in-the-classroom-planning-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Video in the Classroom: Planning checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Type of Video Data.<\/strong> \u00a0Think\u00a0about the video your study needs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unit of Analysis.<\/strong> \u00a0Is it the teacher? \u00a0The student(s)? \u00a0Both? \u00a0This will determine your production design and your analysis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volume of Video.<\/strong> \u00a0It&#8217;s easy to capture more video than you need but you also might need some multiple angles, redundancies, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Analysis.<\/strong> \u00a0Think about the ways you will be analyzing the data. \u00a0Certain shots will affect what you can see.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Editing.<\/strong> \u00a0Think about the role of editing in your research. \u00a0Is it needed? \u00a0Who will do it? \u00a0Using what parameters, etc.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Permissions and Blessings.<\/strong> \u00a0Make sure\u00a0your have all your consent forms in place and you&#8217;ve worked with school personnel to comply with all there needs, requirements, and expectations. \u00a0Don&#8217;t assume they know what your pretense means to their mission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment Logistics.<\/strong> Determine what equipment you have and what you need. \u00a0Some options include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Micro studio. \u00a0There are newer, small cameras (smartphones, GoPros, etc.) that can make recording very discrete.<\/li>\n<li>Traditional. \u00a0This includes tripods, camcorders, and other gear associated with higher education video recording in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Classroom Sensitive Videography.<\/strong> \u00a0This is a whole workshop unto itself, but here are some tenets to guide your planning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do no harm.<\/strong>\u00a0 Make sure your production efforts are as discrete as possible. \u00a0Think stagehands in a play moving the sets: \u00a0The idea is not to be seen. \u00a0The camera alone alters the experience\/moment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There are no &#8220;take twos&#8221;.<\/strong> Make sure you are displined in your planning and have redundant processes that protect you from when things fail (and they will).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Data Workflows.<\/strong> \u00a0How will the data get from the classroom to your office or lab for analysis and,\u00a0ultimately, to your pre-defined secure storage?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Production Design.<\/strong> \u00a0This is the final expression\u00a0of your equipment, logistics, workflows, etc. \u00a0Production design is ways in which you capture video in the room.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Audio is everything.<\/strong> \u00a0Make sure you use microphones when possible\u00a0and that you do many sound checks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blocking and Staging.<\/strong> \u00a0Decide if you need to position the teachers or students in\u00a0a certain way to be recorded. \u00a0Or, decide where you can place the camera to record them in their natal state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>B-Roll.<\/strong> \u00a0Many classroom videos are used for documentary purposes. \u00a0If so, make sure to capture lots of B-roll.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep things tidy.<\/strong> \u00a0Don&#8217;t make a huge production out of things.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You&#8217;re not there.<\/strong> \u00a0Make sure that you don&#8217;t interact with children or the teacher as part of your production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Post Production.<\/strong> \u00a0If your data need editing, you&#8217;ll need the talent, tools, and time to do this. \u00a0You will need to know what analysis, distribution, and archival plans are in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distribution and Archival.<\/strong> \u00a0Getting the video to the researchers and keeping it safe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Type of Video Data. \u00a0Think\u00a0about the video your study needs.
