INTASC 1 Reflections

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

The teacher needs to have some type of expertise in the field he or she is teaching. Teachers also need to have the resources to find out new information easily. They need to be able to teach the school curriculum in a way that helps children. The children need to be able to go to the teacher with any questions.

The person I chose for this standard is not a teacher, but my mother Karen. She worked in journalism and communications all her life, more recently though she switched to oncology. Where she is writing a book on Alzheimer’s. She went into this area not knowing much; I now would consider her an expert in progress. She never passed up the chance to use specific resources that help her.
