Reflection 2016:
The teacher knows that by working with students, to establish and set of rules/ classroom etiquette, is the best way to foster an environment that will be supportive to student’s individual and collaborative learning. Teacher’s know how to encourage each one of their students, to be continually working on their goals—this is done through positive social interaction and an engaging learning environment, through self-motivation.
In my Practicum 361 class, this fall, I am placed in a split English Enrichment class, where I work as a teacher, for a small group of students. During group time, we place a lot of emphasis on positive social engagements. The idea is that by doing this, we are building and modeling the proper way to establish relationships with other individuals, that they may not normally talk to; which creates a certain level of trust in the classroom. For me to be able to do this, I have to show my students that I am also able to establish positive relationships, with others, based on a common end goal—for me that I working with others to create an IEP for a student. I believe that in order to work well with others you need to be understanding and respectful, of their wants and ideas. A major limitation in a classroom, where there is never any respect, is actual chaos, because no one cares about listening and working with others.
For me, I have always been the type of person who is very easy to approach, and this was always an important factor for me. I knew that if I was approachable, and showed respect to all, my students in my practicum classes would be more willing to come up and ask for help. In Practicum 361, I have a one student, who always wants my help, and when I asked her why it always had to be me, she answered “because you always smile when you are helping me.”
In my future classroom, one goal that I have always had on my mind, was to insist that my classroom, will be an environment that everyone will feel safe, respected, and have the utmost support system. However, this cannot come from just me, I want the families of my students to feel the same way. I believe that a time where all families need to feel that safe and respectful support is during a case conference, for an IEP meeting. This is already a very stressful time for parents, they need to be able to feel comfortable asking questions, giving information, and participating in these meeting—because everyone in these meetings have one common goal, which is to find out what is best for the student. Students need to learn that group work is an essential aspect of life— and for me as a teacher, I am responsible for giving guidelines to my students, in order to make sure they are prepared for any type environment that may require collaboration.
