Reflection 2016:

The teacher plans their instruction in a way that supports every student, and pushes them to meet a more demanding set of learning goals. Teachers understand that their student’s individual differences can be a major impact on ongoing development. The teacher will draw upon knowledge of the content area, the curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and instruction in order to create an environment that is beneficial to students.

For me the most rewarding part of teaching, is when I see my students learning with a smiles on their faces, and excitement in their eyes. Each student has a subject that he or she is better and and enjoys more than all the others. My goal as a teacher, is to encourage their love for learning, I want each of my students to enjoy, appreciate, and become active participants in all subjects. For me as a teacher, I am able to step back and allow my students to take over, my goal is always to push them a little further, and allow and encourage them to help other students. If they are good and math, have them help others, and this is the same with English, Science, etc. I had a high school teacher once tell me the if one of us was confused, he wanted other students to step up and explain the lesson, because it may be beneficial to the person that is confused to hear it from another student, using their own vernacular, to explain.

As a teacher, I require my students to create a chart, the chart shows what they want accomplished every month and the second is what goals do they want accomplished by the end of the year. I require my students to keep this goal sheet as a visual reminder of what they are working for, and what they promised they would do. This holds them accountable—the students are the ones who set the goals, not me. A limitation of this, is that I may not always know what each of my student’s goals are, and because of this I am not always able to make sure that students are holding, or reaching these goals. While working with children, and being in a classroom, I have learned that life can and is unpredictable. There is no right way to teach or learn, no two kids are the same, and no lesson will go exactly the way you plan.

In order for a student to meet these demanding learning goals; one child may need to hear everything straightforward; however, another child will need to be constantly reminded, and another will need a tangible paper copy of what they are supposed to be doing/ learning. You have to know each one of your students, and be able to adapt and communicate the curriculum, and skills based on what they need. My goal is to, never teach to a test, but to follow the Indiana State Standards and create my lessons as an open pathway for knowledge. In order to create this open pathway, my students need to understand that I am a person who will do anything to assist my students in achieving their goals. Even if that means changing my teaching styles, adding additional resources, modifying or extending assignments or assessments in order to help my students. There are millions of ways to teach a student, and a very common method that each community/ corporation is using is the one-to-one technology ratio. For me though, technology is a weakness of mine I am not very tech-savvy. However, I am a fast and a willing learner, I will make it my job to learn everything that I can about incorporating technology into my classroom for everyday use, especially since technology is so prevalent in today’s society.
