Let’s Get Visual

Visual Cue Cards Enhance Classroom Management

This summer, I attended a conference on appealing to special needs students.  There were many strategies presented about adding more visual elements to your classroom.  I felt like I wasn’t doing enough to appeal to the visual learners in my classroom.  This year, I have tried out visual cue cards for classroom management.  I will also be presenting best practices strategies on text mapping activities, character posters and some writing activities that use Rory’s Story Cubes.  I received Donors Choose grants that allowed me to buy supplies for these activities.

Challenges or Obstacles:

  • There are a few costs involved in purchasing these items for your classroom.

Benefits and Successes:

  • The visual cue cards help students better regulate their own behaviors.
  • Text mapping helps students interact with texts easier as a group.
  • The Rory’s Story Cubes help decrease writer’s block and increase creativity.
  • These activities have all increased student engagement.
