Staff-led Professional Development: Analyzing Marzano’s ‘The Art and Science of Teaching’

Professional Development Day Helps Teachers to Improve Student Performance and Engagement

Our staff was given copies of Marzanos The Art and Science of Teaching and felt it was best addressed in short presentations. We divided the staff up into small groups and assigned each group a chapter from the book. During our Professional Development Day, we presented our analysis of each chapter of Marzanos book.

Issues this Best Practice Addresses:

Analyzing Marzanos text provided our staff with useful knowledge to improve student performance & engagement, integrate technology, and utilize evidence and inquiry-based instruction. It also helped to develop our teacher leaders taking charge in their own classroom.

Major Challenges to Implementation:

The biggest challenge was to get staff members to actually read the book. Reading and analyzing each chapter took a considerable amount of time.

Benefits Derived from Implementing this Best Practice:

After our presentations during our Professional Development Day, all of our staff were knowledgeable in utilizing engagement pieces in evidence and inquiry-based instruction which ultimately led to increased student performance.

Evidence Illustrating Success:

Based on teacher comments, student engagement has increased across the board. This has led to an increase in student performance.
