Streamlined Fitness Infusion Heart Rate Technology PE Program

Instruction Used to Increase Heart Rate

We developed a streamlined pattern skill development curriculum in order to improve our heart rate time on task with our heart rate technology in our daily physical education classes. With refined instruction we are able to provide students with 60-75% or In Zone or Above heart rate during our daily 30-minute class period because we adapted our skill development management.

Issues this Best Practice Addresses:

We wanted to measure heart rate of students to assess our daily instruction effectiveness and see if we could improve final Fitnessgram scores. The purpose was to provide structured daily lessons that showed an introduction, skill development, application, and game all in a 30-minute lesson. We refined cues and our management practices to allow for students to maintain their heart rate levels during our daily 30-minute class period.

Major Challenges to Implementation:

It is challenging in a daily 30-minute class period to get 4th and 5th grade students to get the heart rate monitors on in a short amount of time. It takes approximately 4-6 weeks for students to successfully put on the heart rate monitor watch and strap and learn the pattern sets that streamline the lessons for the year. Class time has to be used to develop commands to get into the sets quickly.

Benefits Derived from Implementing this Best Practice:

The classroom instruction is much more efficient and not only do students benefit from the skill and heart rate fitness infusion skill development, but they also learn how important cardiovascular heart rate is to their health. It also makes instruction efficient when we implement skill development. Students are able to get 20-50 repetitions in a 5-7 minute skill development period. Additionally, we began developing the patterns in the lower grades to progress them into more difficult patterns.

Evidence Illustrating Success:

Students understand the importance of skill acquisition as it improves their game play and the benefit of the fitness infusion patterns and HR technology as it has impacted their cardiovascular fitness scores. Instruction has improved by 48% of HR In or Above Zone time to providing 75% HR In or Above Zone.
