Workplace training through JEL

Students are Given the Opportunity to Complete Work Training

JEL (J.Everett Light) is a workplace training program offered to our Junior and Seniors.  As an alternative charter school, Options High School has a very diverse population of students.  Many of these students don’t plan on attending a traditional 4 year college.  To help prepare these students for work after high school, JEL offers many programs and classes such as automobile repair, TV and Radio, and Culinary Arts.

Challenges or Obstacles:

  • The biggest challenge is the sudden freedom and responsibility that is given to students.
  • JEL is similar to college and not the tradition high school classroom.
  • This adjustment can be difficult for students who cannot self motivate.

Benefits and Successes:

  • The benefits of the JEL program include real world work training and experience.
  • They are learning a job set that can translate in future employment.
  • Most of the training is also something that cannot be learned in a traditional school setting.
